Which supermarket has the cheapest petrol in 2026?

Asda has historically been the most aggressive on fuel pricing and consistently appears at or near the top of cheapest forecourt rankings. Asda uses a national pricing policy — meaning prices are the same at all Asda forecourts across the country, unlike most other retailers who set prices locally.

Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons are typically within 1-2p per litre of each other and all undercut branded stations. The exact ranking varies week to week depending on wholesale costs and each chain's promotional activity.

Why are supermarket forecourts cheaper?

Fuel as a footfall driver

Supermarkets do not primarily run forecourts to make money from fuel. They use cheap fuel to attract customers to their stores, accepting lower margins on fuel in exchange for the additional grocery spend those customers generate. A driver who saves 5p per litre on fuel is likely to do their weekly shop in the same visit.

Scale and buying power

The big four supermarkets buy fuel in enormous volumes, giving them significant leverage over wholesale suppliers. This buying power translates directly into lower pump prices.

Lower operating costs

Supermarket forecourts are typically self-service, large volume operations with lower per-litre operating costs than smaller branded stations with staffed kiosks and loyalty programmes.

Is supermarket fuel as good as branded fuel?

Yes. All petrol and diesel sold at UK forecourts must meet the same British Standard specifications (EN228 for petrol, EN590 for diesel). Supermarket fuel meets exactly the same legal requirements as fuel sold by BP, Shell or Esso.

Some branded stations add proprietary additive packages — Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate etc — which they claim improve engine performance and cleanliness. Independent tests have produced mixed results on whether these additives deliver meaningful benefits for most drivers. For everyday motoring, supermarket standard grade fuel is perfectly adequate.

Supermarket loyalty points on fuel

Tesco Clubcard and Sainsbury's Nectar both offer loyalty points on fuel purchases, adding further value. Tesco Clubcard points on fuel are worth approximately 0.5p per litre in voucher value. Morrisons More card also offers points on fuel. These schemes add modest but genuine value on top of already competitive pump prices.
