Petrol Stations Breaking Fuel Price Rule — Live Data

2026-09-02 · 5 min read

Hundreds of UK petrol stations, including major supermarket forecourts, are breaking the law by failing to report their pump prices to the Government's Fuel Finder system within 30 minutes of any change. An investigation has found that 410 supermarket forecourts out of 2,229 registered on Fuel Finder had not uploaded a price change for more than a week, while 226 stations had either submitted no data at all or were listed as temporarily closed. With CMA enforcement now active, these stations face fines of up to 30% of annual turnover.

What the investigation found

According to reporting published on 7 July 2026, data from the Fuel Finder system showed that of 7,765 open forecourts providing prices for E10 petrol, a significant number were failing to meet the 30-minute reporting requirement. The most striking finding was that 410 supermarket forecourts — nearly one in five of all supermarket stations on the system — had not uploaded a price change for more than a week.

Given that petrol and diesel prices have been highly volatile in 2026, moving by multiple pence per litre over short periods due to the Middle East conflict and subsequent price falls, a week without any price update is almost certainly a reporting failure rather than a genuine period of unchanged prices. In June 2026 alone, diesel prices fell by a record 17p per litre — any station that did not update its Fuel Finder price during that month was significantly misrepresenting its pump price to comparison tools and drivers.

Are supermarkets really breaking the rules?

The Petrol Retailers Association, which represents independent forecourts, offered one partial explanation: smaller, rural sites that only receive fuel deliveries approximately once per month may update prices less frequently because their prices genuinely change less often. However, this explanation does not account for supermarket forecourts, which receive deliveries regularly and price dynamically.

A CMA spokesperson said that most petrol stations were now registered and providing price information, helping motorists save money by comparing fuel costs. The spokesperson added that enforcement action would be taken against retailers failing to meet legal requirements, while noting that some stations may update prices less frequently depending on their pricing approach. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said most petrol stations were providing data to the scheme. (source)

The CMA has signalled it wants to bring stations into compliance rather than impose maximum fines immediately. However, the regulator has been clear that the grace period is over and formal investigations are now possible for persistent non-compliance.

Why this matters for drivers

The Fuel Finder scheme was established specifically to address a finding from the CMA's 2023 fuel market study: that competition between forecourts had weakened since 2019 and drivers were paying around £900 million more per year at supermarket pumps due to increased retailer margins. The scheme is designed to make prices transparent and put competitive pressure on retailers.

If stations report stale prices — or no prices at all — the scheme cannot work as intended. A driver using a comparison tool like Save at the Pump to find the cheapest station and drive there, only to find the actual price is different from what was shown, is being directly misled. This is precisely the harm the legislation was designed to prevent.

Government officials predicted that Fuel Finder could save motorists around £40 per year by encouraging price comparison and increasing competition. That saving is undermined when a significant proportion of stations are not reporting accurately.

How Save at the Pump handles stale data

We flag stations whose prices have not been updated for more than seven days with an orange warning on our map. Stations not updated for more than 30 days receive a prominent red warning noting that the price may not reflect current pump prices and that the station may be in breach of Fuel Finder reporting rules.

Our admin data currently shows several hundred UK stations with prices more than seven days old. We share this data with journalists and researchers on request — contact details are on our press page.

How to report a station showing incorrect prices

If you visit a petrol station and the price on the pump does not match what was shown on a comparison tool, you can report it directly to the CMA at gov.uk/cma. The CMA has confirmed it treats reports from members of the public as intelligence for enforcement investigations.

You can also check whether a station near you has recently updated its prices using our live fuel price map. The last updated timestamp appears on every station popup — if it shows more than a few days old, treat the price with caution.

What happens to stations that keep breaking the rules?

The CMA's enforcement process begins with warning letters, moves to formal investigations, and can ultimately result in financial penalties of up to 30% of annual UK turnover. For a large supermarket chain, 30% of turnover from fuel sales represents a very substantial sum. The maximum penalty is deliberately set high to deter deliberate non-compliance rather than genuine administrative failures.

The actual penalty in any given case depends on how long the breach lasted, whether the operator attempted to conceal it, and the size of the business. A large supermarket chain failing to update prices for months would face significantly different treatment from a small independent station that missed a few updates.
